Forming communicative competence in preschoolers with disabilities of intellectual development using role-playing games

Abstract

The article considers the topical issue of optimizing the speech development of children with intellectual
disabilities, the growth of requirements for which is due to the introduction of new programs and learning
technologies into the education system. The purpose of the article is to present and analyze the results
of the scientific study concerning the formation of communicative competence in preschoolers with
intellectual disabilities using role-playing games. To achieve this purpose, the theoretical and empirical
methods have been used, which have allowed not only justifying the relationship between playing
and children’s speech development but also developing appropriate means of role- playing games –
material, digital, didactic, and literary-informative, systematically implementing them in correctional
and pedagogical process of a special preschool institution, analyzing the effectiveness of the study.
The developed system includes such areas of correctional-pedagogical work as: enrichment, correction
and activation of vocabulary; formation and consolidation of grammatically and morphologically correct
speech; development of coherent, expressive dialogic speech; upbringing of motivational needs in
communication; upbringing of speech culture in communication. The results of the system of formation
of communicative competence of children with intellectual disabilities presented in the article testify
to the positive trends in the development of speech of the investigated, in particular: increasing active
vocabulary; increasing concentration and awareness of the addressed speech; growing grammatical and
morphological correctness of speech; observing the norms and rules of cultural speech, using means
of expression –appropriate intonation, volume, emotional color of speech. The results presented in the
article allow concluding that the prospects for further research should be related to the following areas of
scientific-practical searches: studying the means of optimizing the communicative state of children with
intellectual disabilities; developing the educational-methodical support for the activities of institutions
of preschool education; introducing the system of formation of communicative competence using roleplaying
games into preschool educational programs and programs of development; studying further the
criteria for assessing children’s communicative competences.
