EVOLUTION OF PERCEPTIONS ABOUT THE IMPACT OF VIDEO GAMES ON ADOLESCENTS: FROM THREATS TO OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT OF MENTAL HEALTH
Abstract
This article explores the evolution of scientific views on the impact of video games on adolescents – from seeing games as a developmental threat to recognizing their potential for cognitive growth, learning, and mental health support. The study aimed to trace shifts in perceptions based on modern empirical evidence and to outline the conditions under which gaming can have positive or negative outcomes. Methods included a theoretical analysis of academic sources and a synthesis of empirical research findings. Early concerns about aggression and gaming addiction were partly justified; however, current research highlights the multidimensional effects of gaming. Under specific circumstances, games enhance attention, problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, and social interaction, particularly in adolescents with ADHD. A key trend is the development of therapeutic games aimed at correcting cognitive and emotional disturbances. Conclusions emphasize the decisive role of context: the content of the game, duration of play, and individual traits of adolescents determine the actual effects of gaming activity.
The findings can be used to justify the integration of video games into psycho-pedagogical work with adolescents, to develop recommendations for the safe use of gaming content to support mental health, to design educational programs and training aimed at enhancing cognitive and social skills, and as a theoretical basis for further empirical research in the field of psychological support for adolescents with ADHD.
